Job Details - What we’ll need from you:

  • Full time & permanent position

  • Typical store hours are 10am-6pm, with possibilities for half days on Saturdays (in exchange for time during the week)

  • Wages begin at $17/hr and depend upon experience and skill level

  • 100% in person work in our Cedar Rapids based shop, no remote possibility

  • 401(k) with 5% employer match

Job Responsibilities - You’ll be responsible for:

  • Take customers’ measurements to fit, repair, or alter clothing to their specifications

  • Perform garment fittings with customers and make appropriate alterations markings with chalk or pins

  • Provide style and expert fit advice to customers during fittings

  • Record required alterations and/or repair instructions with ample notes and details regarding customer specifications

  • Perform expert quality and efficient alterations on a variety of garments such as shirts, pants, blouses, gowns, jackets etc. with industrial sewing machines

  • Operate a gravity iron

  • Follow ticket instructions completed by co-workers based on customer specifications

  • Meet deadlines and customer expectations for garment alterations

  • Provide exceptional customer service across all customer interactions (welcome, measurements, phone calls, pickup)

  • Cooperate with other seamstresses/tailors in a shared working environment, providing feedback when asked, and instructing and educating when needed

  • Practice patience when instructing and educating other seamstresses

  • Maintain a clean and organized work room environment

  • Operate register when checking out customers

  • Open and close the shop depending upon the assigned shift. Includes, but is not limited to, opening/closing the cash register, checking voicemails and calling back customers, starting up/closing down equipment and basic tidying and cleaning when needed

About You

What knowledge and skills you’ll bring to the role

  • You are an expert seamstress/tailor and there are few garment repairs or alterations that you cannot tackle or have not encountered before

  • You can operate a high-speed sewing machine and other sewing equipment such as seam ripper or razor blade, hand iron, steamer, and others with expertise

  • You’re extremely comfortable working with ready-made garments and taking them apart and putting them back together again with a professional finish as if no alteration had been made

  • You have attention to detail and deliver a high quality and professional end-product to the customer

  • You work quickly and efficiently with minimal errors

  • You know how to make repairs to garments with techniques such as patching and both hand and machine darning

  • You have an eye for fashion, and can update an older garment to modernize it

  • You can add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

  • You have basic computer and tablet literacy and a knowledge of internet software to operate the register

  • You have expertise in designing, building mockups, and constructing custom garments from scratch 

  • As a teacher, you are patient, kind, and can break processes and concepts down that can be easily picked up and understood by someone knew

What experience & education you bring to the role

  • You have extensive sewing and garment fitting experience

  • You have extensive experience altering ready-made garments ranging from simple hems, taking in pants at the waist, or zipper replacements, to more complex jobs such as altering wedding dresses or reconstructing a suit jacket

  • You have worked in an alterations shop or department for 10+ years or you have been a reliable go-to for altering clothing of family and friends for 10+ years

  • You have prior custom garment construction experience

  • Prior design experience is an advantage
